Our Story

The Marine Hotel first opened its doors in August 1868 and was described as "a handsome new hotel".

In the early days, the hotel was patronised by sailors looking to unwind after weeks at sea.

The Marine quickly became a den of iniquity. 'Ladies of the Night' would occupy many of the rooms whilst gambling, trading of smuggled goods and other underhand activities went on in the function rooms. Fights would frequently break out in the bar and a fearsome reputation was forged.

Then in 2013, 145 years after it first opened, having seen better days and with it's reputation all but forgotten, The Marine was sold.

After a good spruce up and some TLC, the pub leapt back to life under its new owners, Alex and Steph.

The sale of contraband is no longer permitted, and bare knuckle fighting is strictly prohibited, but we're sure you'll still have an amazing time at The Marine!

With a fine selection of craft beers, ales, wines and spirits as well as a delicious menu prepared by our renowned chefs, The Marine is proud to be CAMRA Pub of the Year for South Shields and Sunderland 2020 and South Tyneside cider pub of the year 2017, 2018, 2019 & 2020.

Our reviews speak for themselves...

"Been coming here regularly ever since Alex and Steph took it over. The improvement has been amazing. An excellent, consistently changing selection of local ales and a good range of lagers/ciders/spirits.

Food has been top notch whenever we've eaten. The staff are all extremely friendly and laid back."

The smell Went as it was pet friendly so thought it would be ideal .. I’ve never smelt a smell like it the whole place smells like a latrine and I couldn’t stand to even order food I had to Leave . . I’m by no means a snob infact I’m as rough as however even for me I couldn’t stand to be in there. If your thinking of going don’t
Fabulous place. Great staff. Went with a mixed aged group of people. The staff were very helpful and couldn’t do enough for us. Friendly pub with a nice atmosphere. Good location.

Great old fashioned pub and prices The prices are cheap beers really good and it’s a nice location the staff are helpful as well. I would recommend good location.
Delicious food, friendly staff Me and sone friends visited the Marine on Friday night. Booked a table and had some drinks followed by food from the menu. We all ordered different meals and they were all delicious. Had a lovely night, the staff are fantastic and the atmosphere friendly. Well worth a visit to this lovely pub. Children and dogs are welcome and they cater for people with allergies too. My friend is gluten free and other friend has a fish allergy and both were given good choices from the menu. Will definitely be back ?
