Our Story

The Marine Hotel first opened its doors in August 1868 and was described as "a handsome new hotel".

In the early days, the hotel was patronised by sailors looking to unwind after weeks at sea.

The Marine quickly became a den of iniquity. 'Ladies of the Night' would occupy many of the rooms whilst gambling, trading of smuggled goods and other underhand activities went on in the function rooms. Fights would frequently break out in the bar and a fearsome reputation was forged.

Then in 2013, 145 years after it first opened, having seen better days and with it's reputation all but forgotten, The Marine was sold.

After a good spruce up and some TLC, the pub leapt back to life under its new owners, Alex and Steph.

The sale of contraband is no longer permitted, and bare knuckle fighting is strictly prohibited, but we're sure you'll still have an amazing time at The Marine!

With a fine selection of craft beers, ales, wines and spirits as well as a delicious menu prepared by our renowned chefs, The Marine is proud to be CAMRA Pub of the Year for South Shields and Sunderland 2020 and South Tyneside cider pub of the year 2017, 2018, 2019 & 2020.

Too Noisy for us The reason we left was due to the head banging noise that we first thought was a Live Band with over active Drummer. It was early on a Saturday evening and we had walked there from our seafront Hotel for dinner and drinks with our Labrador as it is Dog Friendly. It was wedged when we first arrived but managed to get a seat after others left, but many people were waiting at the Bar to be served so we left in search of somewhere quieter.

BEST Pub in So Shields I had the pleasure of stopping by The Marine on my recent trip to the UK. Bar none, it’s the best pub in So Shields with the best bartenders in town. Charlotte, Peter and Becky provided beyond exceptional service. They were friendly, professional, and made wonderful drink suggestions. I visited many pubs in the area and the staff here is what made it my favorite go to. I will be back. 💖

Meal We ordered fish and chips and also a classic burger and my partner cut into the burger and it was still bloody and Luke warm and we told the bar man he said it cooked fully and the chef mixes the mince with tomato puree also that wasn't on the menu dispristion and we won't be ordering from they again we were they today 17th October 2022

Good local pub Lively local pub. Good drinks avaliable with a wide range of cask ales. Good quality pub grub! And plenty of it. Right up my street. Good vegan options. Dog friendly too.Bar staff and locals canny too

Very nice We enjoyed a few drinks and a lovely evening meal after a day of catching up and beers! Our food was what u would best describe as proper hearty grub. Tasty starters, tasty mains. One salmon, one pork and one mice and spuds. Very nice indeed.

brilliant food, excellent service the exterior is little drab, the welcome, food and beer are very welcoming. highly recommended. the beach an park are a short walk away, the toilets are clean.

Johnboy Great traditional pub. Lots of choice of real ale beers including my favourite tipples Stouts and Porters.Staff are very friendly and welcoming and the place has a good atmosphere and good vibe.Dog friendly to the point that our dog now drags us in if go past the pub. Slightly limited menu for my personal taste but food I have had was OK. Needs a lick of paint on outside of pub as it looks a bit tired and may look like it's a bit rough, it definitely isn't so don't let that put you off. Always look forward to visiting this establishment

Very disappointing After being told how good this place was we decided to call in with some friends for a few drinks and some lunch. The bar was very cosy and welcoming as were the staff. Unfortunately what let it down was the food which was pretty awful. In fact the worst that I’ve had in a while. The price charged was a bit steep considering the quality of the food. Can’t understand how people can give such good reviews regarding the quality of the food.Will I go back ……….Definitely Not
